Hi guys, today I didn't get to see much of the crows before the sunset. I did get so see the nest and I got a pretty good picture of it from below. I think I can determine the sex of birds based on thier behaviors though by no means am I an expert. From what I have read female crows will do most of the incubating and spend more time in the nest. The male of the pair feeds the female while she stays in the nest. Male and female crows are indistignishable from each other so the most accurate way to sex them in the field is by observing thier behaviors especially during breeding season.
I got some more good pictures of who I think is the male of the pair since the other crow spent most of the morning sitting in the nest. This kind of behavior makes me think she is preparing to lay eggs by spending time in the nest. Birds have been known to do this from what I have seen. The male bird brought many branches to the nest so I think the nest is still incomplete.
Today marks the weekend for me so I hope to be able to observe the pair more over the next few days. Hopefully my posts in the next couple days will be a little longer with more interesting updates. Also I checked out some books about crows at my school's library. They dont seem very scientific (the pickings were slim) so we will see if I learn anything from them.
Last thing, I am debating naming the birds, It would make it much easier to write about them in a less awkward way. Saying male and female feels very weird to me. On the other hand naming wild animals can be prolematic because they are wild animals. I should keeps a respectable distance from this birds and naming them can create an attachment. Let me know what you think about naming them. Thats all for today, byee!
